Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) was a Belarusian-Jewish painter who became one of the defining figures of Expressionism in the School of Paris. His art is known for its visceral intensity: thick impasto, bold and agitated brushwork, distorted forms, vivid color, and emotionally charged subject matter. He was friends with Amedeo Modigliani after arriving in Paris around 1913. Modigliani introduced Soutine to the art dealer Léopold Zborowski, which helped him gain support and some patronage.
