But as soon as I started the cut, the mill began lifting and I couldn’t get the saw to track straight. Switched to the other side… and suddenly it cut clean. Only problem? No matter how big the log is, this is how I start to mill my logs with my Granberg Alaskan mills. Put a ladder on top of the log, fasten it with 3 inch screws, set the mill to cut at 4.5 inches (below the ladder and the screws), then go! Once the top of the log is off, you can set the mill to your desired thickness and make slabs!! These are the steps I do to cut my first slab using a ladder as a guide. 1) find a log (this one is white pine) 2) Put the ladder on the log 3) Trim high spots to better fit the ladder 4) Screw ladder to the log 5) Set the mill to cut below the ladder (and screws) 6) Cut the first slab by gliding the mill on the ladder!
