A lot of the time they come already cleaned but even if they do I always soak em and clean them. They should be closed when you buy them. If they aren’t they can still be good. Press together the shells and if the shell won’t close then toss em in the garbage because they’re dead. There’s a little nautical looking beard sometimes that peeps out the shell.
