Quillwork, beadwork, basket making, and pottery, are just some examples of Mi'kmaw art. Before European colonization, items were created to be useful and attractive. This continued after colonization, but there was also a rise of commodity art. Europeans were willing to buy or trade for the items, and in response, Mi'kmaw artisans made a new economy of more decorative art. Mi'kmaw art continues to evolve. Inspired to Make: Stories of the Onkwehón:we Epsiode 3 - Amber Waboose Quillwork artist Amber Waboose reflects on the history of quilling, noting that this art form was nearly lost at one point in time. While she uses traditional porcupine quills, birch bark and sweetgrass for her designs, she also explores new materials and modern designs inspired by pop culture, hoping to inspire the younger generation to practice and revitalize this art form.
