The U.S. military has started transferring Islamic State detainees from northeastern Syria to secure facilities in Iraq.
US forces completed their withdrawal from Ain al Assad Airbase, the Iraqi government said on January 18, fulfilling a US agreement with Iraqi authorities going back to 2024. The withdrawal took place as Syrian government forces pushed back the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in Syria.
A pair of foreign policy-focused Republican lawmakers expressed alarm over a recent report of the U.S. potentially withdrawing its troops from Syria, warning that a decreased presence in the country would be to the benefit of ISIS.
In the autumn of 2014, the Kurdish-majority town of Kobani in northern Syria was on the brink of falling to Isis militants. Outgunned and outnumbered, Kurdish fighters were struggling to defend it — until US warplanes began dropping munitions from the sky.
The strikes were part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, which launched in December in response to a deadly ISIS attack on U.S. and Syrian forces in December.
