A fatal police shooting during a freeway confrontation shut down westbound Interstate 80 in the East Bay on Thursday, backing up traffic for miles as authorities investigated.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A crash closed a section of Interstate 80 east in Luzerne County early Thursday morning. According to PennDOT the crash happened just after midnight at the split of Interstate 80 & Interstate 81 near Drums. We have seen traffic being detoured onto Interstate 81.

A semi-truck tipped over on Interstate 80 in Iowa as winter weather moved through the area. The crash occurred on I-80 westbound at mile marker 12, south of Weston. There is no word on any injuries at this time.

The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic about 7:30 a.m. and announced that it had shut down all three lanes on I-80 on the freeway before the Richmond Parkway exit. They later said that they closed a lane on eastbound I-80 and were diverting traffic at the Willow Avenue exit in Hercules.

All lanes were closed on Interstate 80 in the East Bay Area in Hercules for hours on Thursday due Richmond police activity, according to reports.
